Chinese New Year Sequence
The Chinese Lunar New Year 2018 is the year of the Dog, the 11th animal in the Chinese Zodiac. It is said to be the Earth Dog year.
The sequence is a Yang Yoga Sequence showing movement and flow in a steady way. It is created using the many variations of Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose) and Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward Facing Dog Pose), giving importance to the Earth Dog, as per Chinese tradition.
As the name suggests this yoga pose reads as Downward Facing Dog Pose because it shows the image of a dog stretching its limbs- stretching the hind legs and extending the front legs. This amazing stretch is a nice and simple way to open up all the muscles and giving the entire back a good opening. This pose forms part of all types of yoga styles. The fundamental features or benefits of Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose) are:
Stretches the entire body- legs, hips, back, arms, shoulders, spine and neck.
Improves the overall strength of the body.
Uses core muscles to the maximum.
Teach the importance of alignment that is essential in every yoga pose.
Reduces fear and builds confidence with repeated practice.
The main features of this sequence are:
Faith: Have faith in yourself, believe in your strengths and abilities during the yoga practice, just like the dog that has faith in its master.
Surrender: Surrender to your yoga practice and the yoga mat. Create a space for yourself to know yourself the way the body wants you to just like the dog that surrenders completely to its master.
Trust: Trust what the body tell you and listen to what it is communicating. The body and the mind are the best friends that guide you during your yoga practice. Listen and follow it just like the dog that completely trusts and listens to its master.
Stand for what is right: A dog always reacts strongly to something that is not right and does so spontaneously. Hence, the yoga practice should not just be about the yoga mat and you, it should be more about you, away from the yoga mat. Practice and learn to stand for what is right. Conscious practice of this sequence will teach you what is right for the body (with the movements, stretches, breath etc) while laying emphasis on what is right in life too.
